Law enforcement calls them ā€œkinetic impact projectiles,ā€ but they are commonly known as ā€œrubber bullets.ā€ They come in many forms, including cylindrical wooden blocks, bullet-shaped plastic missiles tipped with stiff sponge or foam, fabric sacks filled with metal birdshot, and pepper-spray balls, which are about the size of a paintball and contain the active chemical in pepper spray. "

They are supposed to be fired at the legs or lower torso, and police are trained to avoid the head, neck, and groin. Firing too closely increases the risk of serious injury."
