Robert D. Reischauer, who has headed the Urban Institute since 2000, announced today that he is moving on from the think tank, but that may mean more time for health care policy issues. Without the responsibilities of running Urban, he said in an interview, he expects to have more time to “contribute in a real way to the policy debate.” The move was Reischauer’s decision, and he is not yet sure whether his future health care work (part time — he wants his weekends) will be through Urban or another organization.
Reischauer, 70, is a public trustee for Medicare and Social Security, and a former director of the Congressional Budget Office (1989 to 1995). He also was a member of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission until 2009.
The Urban Institute said in a release that Reischauer will step down at the end of the year, and that they are conducting a national search for a new president of the organization.
